Yanmar’s Electric Saildrive Simplifies One Part of a Diesel Replacement

Yanmar’s SDe range offers an electric route for compatible sailing-yacht installations. An easier mechanical fit can remove one obstacle to conversion, while battery capacity, charging and the complete installed cost still need their own assessment.

A Familiar Installation, a Different Energy System

The SDe range was introduced in 2024, making the current discussion one about repowering rather than a newly announced product. Yanmar lists three outputs: 7, 10 and 15 kW. Its 48V-class architecture integrates the motor, gearbox, controller and cooling system in a compact saildrive arrangement.

The manufacturer describes the range as suitable for sailing yachts up to around 40 feet, depending on displacement and application. It also promotes replacement of compatible YM installations without hull modification. Those statements concern the intended platform; they do not mean every diesel-equipped boat can be converted without inspection or other work.

Where Mechanical Compatibility Helps

Keeping suitable mounting and hull arrangements can reduce one source of complexity. BoatIndustry’s October report places that benefit in the context of owners considering replacement of an existing engine.

The electrical installation still needs space for batteries, charging equipment, protection and cabling. A propulsion unit that fits mechanically can therefore remain a substantial refit once the full system is considered. Existing equipment and the intended operating routine determine the scope.

Yanmar describes integrated cooling and lower maintenance requirements than a combustion engine. Lower maintenance does not mean none: the manufacturer’s service schedule and checks on the drive, seals and installation remain relevant.

Price the Conversion, Not Only the Drive

BoatIndustry reports Dutch retail listings of €20,981 for the SDe7, €23,401 for the SDe10 and €25,821 for the SDe15. These are reported listings at Abma’s Jachtwerf, not a universal Yanmar price schedule or complete installed quotations. The tax treatment and current specification should be confirmed directly before comparing offers.

The report says batteries and a propeller are outside the standard package it discusses. Charging equipment, electrical protection, wiring and labour also need attention. An owner comparing electric and diesel replacement should ask for an itemised proposal covering the same intended service.

Range needs a separate calculation. Usable battery energy, actual power demand, reserve requirements and conditions determine how long the motor can be used. A reported demonstration cannot establish a universal operating distance without those inputs. Before committing, describe the longest realistic auxiliary-motor passage and the charging options at its end.
